Made it to the Celtic Knot chippy joint yesterday for the first time.
I had finished some business in Toms River and was famished . So, I looked up fish and chips near me on my trusty dusty Iphone.
This place popped up with crazy good reviews so off I went on a 20 minute Safari.
Cut to the chase. This isn't a pub with dark walnut walls and dim lighting. It's a bright catering kitchen with some booths on the other side of the establishment to sit down and eat. That's what I did.
I had the single order of fish and a traditional pasty consisting of beef, potatoes and onion in a nicely crisped crust that was just the right thickness. My Grammy used to make them with turnips/rutabaga when I was a wee pup.
Yes I ate everything and I don't regret it one bit.
My cardiologist might, but I'm not telling him a thing.
Food was really done well and fired only when the oil was up to temp.
The fish was off the wall good (crispy, flaky, and not oily) and the chips were doggone good too. Slaw was nicely seasoned with a slight acidity to break through the fried fish and chips.
Malt vinegar, ketchup and napkins are on the tables which I liked so I didn't have to ask for more napkins. I can't stand that.
While I waited for the food to be prepared by the Chef de Cuisine I cruised around and checked out the other UK offerings as well as their frozen food section. You can buy a chanter, wool throw and assorted Scottish, Irish and English Knick knacks all in the same place while you wait for chow to arrive.
I live two hours away but I told my wife about my experience when I got home and she is very much looking forward to coming back with our Son and having a family meal together.
Our Son will love this place too even though he's only 7.
He's a Cod lover so he will be rolling his eyes like a Great White when he takes a bite.
What day does cod fish like the least? Fry-Days!
    Well done!
You take what you do seriously and it shows.
    I wish you much prosperity.

Note: This review is for the restaurant that was inside Cameron's Scottish Foods on Brick Blvd. Apparently they switched over to being a food truck. I've never eaten at the food truck, no less know where to find it. But I assume that the food is still pretty much the same as before.

Stopped in for some fish n chips. I asked for extra coleslaw and was informed that they no longer offered that. OK. I've never been in Scotland or England, but I'm guessing that the authentic version is just fried fish and potatoes. So if they were serving that as a homage to authenticity I'd have no problem. But the owner said that most people didn't eat the coleslaw. He said that it didn't affect the price since he was taking it out of his end. This is confusing to a businessman since all cost must be caculated in the final price. My layman's suggestion would be to ask people who want coleslaw and charge them accordingly.

But, and this may be entirely a figment of my imagination, initially the owner was exceeding friendly. This cooled noticibly after I didn't leave a tip. I am a pretty generous tipper. However when I go to the counter to order, and then bus my own table there's no reason I can see for giving the owner a tip on top of what he's making on the food. Maybe I'm reading more into this than what's there.

Nevertheless, the fish n chips here still rock.

Stopped by while in town with friends for a beach weekend.  Let me start by saying, if you're not familiar with the area, it is nearly impossible to find as there is no obvious signage and I had to call to make sure I was in the right spot.  It is located inside Cameron's Scottish store so don't be deterred when you GPS to the address and see no signs for The Celtic Knot.

Once we found the restaurant, the super friendly owner talked us through the menu and made some recommendations.  Obviously, the fish and chips were our reason for coming so we ordered two of those, a scotch egg, chicken and chips, and the haggis nuggets.  Took a while to get the food because it is made fresh to order, but it was well worth the wait.

Fish and Chips - flaky fish with a golden, crunch coating.  They know what they're doing and they do it well.  Chips left a little to be desired, some were good, others were dried out.

Scotch egg - exactly as you'd expect, not much to write home about but well made and tasty

Chicken and Chips - not great, this is what made this a 4/5 instead of 5/5.  There were two chicken breasts in the meal and somehow they were cooked to two levels of doneness.  One was tough and leathery but the other was cooked perfectly.  Breading was same as fish and very good, but the actual meat left something to be desired.  I know that they specialize in fish, however, there are not many other items for "picky eaters" (such as one in our party) on the menu, so it should  be given the same attention as other items.

Haggis nuggets - my first experience with haggis as a recommendation from the owner.  It was fantastic.  Loved the seasoning in the meat and the fact that it was lightly breaded helped me get acquainted with this formidable culinary dish.  I would definitely order it again but as an entree because the portion is huge.  (Recommendation: add this as an upgraded side with an entree for an additional $1 for one nugget for those who want to try it but not get a whole order and waste half of it.)

Bottom line: Great fish and chips shop that is hard to find but offers great food along with unique options for the more adventurous eater.

The best fucking fish and chips I have ever eaten. The Chef was a rockstar. The fish was blanantly fresh as it cursed me out from the paper tray. The batter was light, flakey but yet had  a massive crunch. I was able to dodge the raindrops like a boss when I walked outside to retrieve my meal.  The great American Food Truck Race doesn't have shit on this truck.
